Hiring a Car – Get the Code

Warning: You need a DVLA code to hire a car in the UK or abroad. From 8 June, new rules mean if you’re hiring a car, your car hire provider may ask you for a DVLA code (to check endorsements, akin to paper licences). This is as a result of the “paper counterpart” element of the driving licence being terminated and replaced by an on-line service.

To access your details on-line you need to provide the following information

  • Your Driving Licence Number
  • Your National Insurance Number
  • The Postcode that appears on your driving licence

You can obtain your details from the view your driving licence information page on the You Gov website.

The Code is valid for 21 days from date of issue, once issued we suggest you print a copy of the webpage and take it with you to the Car Hire desk. If possible arrange to access the information on-line at your Car Hire companies office.
